Flavlets 10/12

October 12th, 2007 at 2:20 p.m.

Despite an especially busy week here at the Blue Flavor World Headquarters (as well as our New York branch!), we’ve got a large batch of Flavlets for you this week, touching on all sorts of interesting topics.

First things first: big congrats to our good Seattle friends at Newsvine and MSNBC.com. The later announced a purchase of the former, in what is undoubtedly the most significant acquisition by a traditional news media company of a new media startup. We’re expecting big things.

The site is now up for Web Directions North 2008. Blue Flavor’s Brian Fling will be speaking at the event in Vancouver, and the rest our crew will be heading up to Whistler for the post-event skiing and snowboarding. See you there!

Funniest blog we’ve seen in a while: The blog of unnecessary quotation marks.

Most of Blue Flavor seems to be right-brained, if this dancer spinning in circles test is accurate at all. But the real fun of it is not seeing which way she spins for you initially, but trying to will her into changing directions. Use your favorite Jedi mind tricks.

Frank Wiles wrote a terrific piece on hiring programmers. If you like it, you may also be interested in his follow up.

The awesome social/video service Vimeo adds HD. w00t!

Over at ideasonideas there is a great post about how agencies can work better with clients. Something we think about all the time.

The trailer for The Golden Compass is out. This is going to be the big winter blockbuster.

Replug, it’s like MagSafe for your headphones. Now if they would only make one compatible with the iPhone.

A long while back, Garrett bookmarked this visual joins explanation so he could use it to help people understand how joins work when they asked him. Recently, Kottke linked to it as well. The moral is: It’s good, use it!

QuickPick, while unfinished, looks really useful. Check out the demo video.

The second episode of Maniacal Rage TV was released recently and the show was featured on iTunes once again. Episode 2 is in even higher resolution so it looks good on your TV too!

One of our clients was mentioned in the science profiles on Apple.com about iPods and their portable sonogram equipment.
