Hot from my workshop at webvisions yesterday, here is my 103-slide magnum opus on Mobile Design.
My workshop focused on the mobile ecosystem, some of the basic fundamentals as well as dispel myths and jargon common to the mobile industry. As this information can be incredibly hard to come by outside of the mobile industry, it seemed like a good place to start.
I had a lot of material that I didn’t have time to cover, so I’ve already begun working on Designing for Mobile Part II, in which I will dive deeper into the Mobile web, explore topics like Messaging, Mobile Usability & Testing and more detailed tips and techniques of Mobile Information Architecture and Visual Design.
But being a mobile designer doesn’t need to be as perplexing as it may seem. Given a little insider information and what you already probably know, you can begin creating the next generation of mobile websites and applications.

Awesome Brian, thanks for making this available for download. You’ve fully convinced me I really should have gotten down to your workshop.
“Stay open minded.” Great advice. Mobile design with its 30+ browsers still feels like the wild west- buy hey, the west has to be settled- land rush anyone?
Oh, can’t wait to read this! All someone needs to do is develop an emulator for all said 30 browsers and we can test to all our hearts content ;)
Absolutely one of the best decks of presentation slides I’ve seen in a loooong time. Brilliant job, Brian (and team). Wish i could be there.
Bravo!
There’s so much information here but it’s extremely well presented. I haven’t seen anything this exciting about mobile design in quite some time.
Fantastic, Brian. Thanks for putting this out there.
Yes, thank you for making this available. BIG time motivation to get started with mobile (and also to hit Webvisions next year).
Thanks so much for making this available for us! I live in India and it’s not always possible to attend workshops, though I would love to!
Wow - Slide 38 is a masterpiece. Thanks for sharing this!
However, I disagree with your premise on page 27. While Smartphones may make up a smaller percentage of handsets of the total overall market, it’s been my experience (in Asia - the US may be different) that they account for more than their share of wap page consumption and are increasing at a rapid pace.
Hey Brian,
Great presentation! Thank you for sharing.
I was intrigued by slide 38. One of the greatest challenges of the mobile web right now is actually getting people on to it. Typing in URLs in a mobile phone is very awkward (usually they’re terribly long and T9 predictive text doesn’t work). QR codes only have widespread use in Asia. Sending WAP-pushes (URL via an SMS) brings considerable costs with it.
More intelligent functionality like ‘send this link via SMS/email’ in the phones or ‘send this link via bluetooth’ in regular PCs will hopefully help bridge this gap in the future.
I did a presentation last year on euroIA (www.euroia.org) which was a case study on a mobile website for Sony Ericsson which you might find interesting. It seems we ran into similar challenges. The PDF (1.9 Mb) is available from http://blog.mediacatalyst.com/images/mobile_information_architecture.pdf
Excellent presentation! It helped me learn alot about designing for the mobile market..
Thanks!
